“Godspell” Character Breakdown
JESUS – Must have high energy, be charming, funny, gentle but with strength. He is the
sort of person that others follow.
JOHN THE BAPTIST – Small role, will also become one of the other disciples. He also
must be charismatic, and can take charge of a group.
JUDAS – He is both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who
begins to question and rebel. He is more overtly revolutionary. He is the most “serious”
and intellectual of the group, though as with all the actors, he must still possess a good
sense of physical comedy.
JEFFREY – Very high energy. Impish and playful.
LAMAR – Not the brightest in the bunch, he is a little slow on the uptake. But there is a
sweetness and innocence about him. Sings “All Good Gifts,” must be strong vocally.
HERB – The comedian, the class clown. The guy who can do a hundred voices and
imitations.
ROBIN – A bit of a tomboy, but basically open and sweet. She is the first of the group to
commit to following Jesus in the song “Day by Day.”
JOANNE – The confident one, the show-off. The first one to volunteer, sometimes she
jumps in before she really understands what’s going on. - This is useful when singing O bless the lord my soul.
PEGGY – The shy one. Sometimes and little slow to get things, but what she does, she
commits all the way. Has an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her.
SONIA – Sassy and slightly cynical, the most urban of the group. Also the “Sexy” one,
but her sexiness contains a large element of put-on imitation.
GILMER – The female equivalent of the class clown. Goofy and a cutie. Must be a
strong comedian.
We will also audition for a small ensemble who will sing all group numbers and
participate in some larger scenes.

Revivalist Preachers
Definition: evangelist: a preacher of the Christian gospel
If you watch the video around 1:20 we see the revivalist become very passionate about what he's talking about and he does it in a very performance based way to entice his listeners. I like the use of this idea because it emphasizes the stereotype of that we have of a preacher and is entertaining to the audience of which will be primary school children and will probably make them laugh and keep them interested in the show. Therefore I'm going to use the idea of big gestures and a different register/tone of voice to characterize one of my characters of a revivalist preacher to entertain.
